Citing Your Resources

Why is it important to cite your sources?

Any facts, ideas or images that you do not create yourself must be given proper credit if you use them in your research. Why? Because you are using someone else's intellectual work and you need to document that these are not your original ideas.

Violating this acknowledgment of credit is called plagiarism and it has serious consequences.

By citing the sources of your research, you acknowledge the origin of your information, thus lending credibility to your work by showing evidence of your research. It also demonstrates the authenticity of your research and allows others to locate additional information concerning your topic, should they desire to do so.
